Xcamp's annual surf trip to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. 7/31 - 8/5
For the last 13 summers, Xcamp has taken up to 12 campers to the Outer Banks in North Carolina on a 6 day surf trip. In the past, we've camped out in the Frisco Campgrounds. The last 3 years, however, we've had the opportunity to stay in a house not far from the campgrounds in Frisco. The trip has not changed. We still get up early, find the best spot to surf, whether it be the historic Lighthouse, Frisco pier, the campground, Avon or even Pea Island! When the surf isn't cooperating, no worries, there's still tons to do. Fishing, snorkeling, crabbing, kayaking and experiencing the local vibe all are part of the trip as well.
Scott Busbey and Curtis Cromwell, our friends from Natural Art Surf Shop in Buxton, always teach us something new every year about the island like where to surf or what to do. A highlight of the trip is when Scott (who has been shaping surfboards for over 30 years) and Curtis take us on a tour of how a surfboard is made. We see every step of the process, from block of foam to the finished product.
After some home cooked dinners, twice during the trip, the race is on at Frisco Mini-Golf and Go-Karts!! There's pool, ice cream, mini-golf and an arcade but nothing beats the infamous slick track Go-Karts.
For a change of pace, we all take a ferry ride over to Ocracoke Island where there's tons of shops, sightseeing, pirate museums and local legends.
A trip to the Outer Banks wouldn't be complete without visiting and climbing the Lighthouse at Cape Hatteras. It's the tallest lighthouse in the nation and climbing the 268 steps (Over 200 feet tall) to the top gives an fantastic view of the surrounding area.
